Borrowing homes

At twenty two years and then some
I believed that some people
Represent homes and gezelligheid
That the cadences of their heart
Would mimic mine and vice versa

Despite arrivals and departures
During stormy days and balmy nights
I could still borrow homes
To nestle in, for safekeeping
Projections, letters and secrets

At twenty five years and then some
I believe that some people
Represent second selves and confidants
That the despite the currents that carry us
Our wavelengths will keep us afloat

Despite arrivals and departures
During exacting mornings and enervating evenings
I no longer borrow homes
For I am my own, for safekeeping
Prejudices, idiosyncrasies and vindications
