Disenchantment

The canopy of lights burned bright,
Strung yellow, green and red.
Lonesome though she was
Elated; she beamed tonight.

And then he came around,
And then they spoke,
Implied promises;
Hearts, flowers and a merry-go-round.

They walked side by side
Hearts a-flutter,
What’s a big gesture anyway?
Would it last forever, would it abide?

It set in slowly, built in itself a refuge
But it dissipated in a matter of time,
All that remained in the end,
Was a disconnect and a deluge.

Who knew we could outgrow
The ties that bind,
Who knew neglect could maim,
Any chance at tomorrow.
